Ask Allstar AI about this guide

Check first

  • Which connection does your POS or integrator need: USB, Ethernet, serial, or Ethernet plus one of those?
  • Is the Base Module connected to the M400's USB-C port and to the power supply?
  • Is the terminal on an approved Verifone stand?

This guide covers physically installing a Verifone M400 customer-facing PIN pad: connecting it through its single USB-C port with ICE Cube modules, powering it, mounting it, and the first power-on. Application and POS integration steps come from your integrator or Allstar support.

Before you start

  • Use only Verifone power pack PWR445-001-01-A (12 V DC, 1 A).
  • Remove the power cord from the Base Module before connecting any peripheral or module, and reconnect it only when everything is attached.
  • Decide which connection you need. The ICE Cube system supports USB, Ethernet, Ethernet + USB, Serial, or Ethernet + Serial. A Powered USB cable (CBL445-003-01-A) is the alternative for a single USB connection carrying power and data.
  • Verifone recommends an approved stand for every installation.

Steps

  1. Place the M400 on a flat counter or Verifone stand near the POS and a power outlet, indoors and away from heat, moisture, metal objects and anti-theft gates. Angle it so PIN entry cannot be seen or filmed. Expected: a placement that meets Verifone's guidance.
  2. Unpack and inspect for tampering or damage, remove the wrap and display film, and keep the packaging. Expected: no damage; you know which accessories ship separately.
  3. Unscrew and remove the rear cable cover to reach the USB-C port. Expected: the port is accessible.
  4. With no power cord attached, connect the Base Module to the USB-C port and clip the Serial, USB or Ethernet module(s) between the Base Module and the end cap. Expected: a module chain ending in the end cap.
  5. Connect the power supply to the Base Module, plug the AC cord into a wall outlet or surge protector, and close the cable cover. Expected: the terminal powers up. Removing power shuts it down.
  6. Mount on the stand: align the stand screws with the rear keyholes and slide the terminal down to lock. Expected: the terminal is secure and card slots are unobstructed.
  7. Allow about 60 seconds after power-on for the terminal to stabilize. Calibration and date/time checks are Supervisor-level functions in the Administration menu; ask Allstar support if you need them. Expected: the idle or application screen appears and the touchscreen responds.

If that did not work

  • Terminal does not start: use a dedicated power source and check every cable connection, including the power connector. If it still does not start, contact Allstar support.
  • Dark display: tap the screen; the unit may be in screen-saver mode. If the display is garbled, inspect all cable connections.
  • Contactless fails: make sure nothing sits between the contactless logo and the card.
  • Only use the Verifone-supplied power pack. Do not disassemble the unit.

Stop and contact support if

  • Any tamper or security alert on screen: stop and contact Allstar support.
  • The terminal asks for a Supervisor or administration password you do not have: stop and contact Allstar support.
  • The terminal does not start on a dedicated outlet with the Verifone power pack and the Base Module cables fully seated.

Contact Allstar support with the model (M400 or M400 Wi-Fi/BT), serial number, the ICE Cube modules or cable in use, the POS it connects to, and the exact message on screen.

Notes

  • The M400 has no printer. Receipt printing comes from the POS it is attached to.
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n) is only on the M400 Wi-Fi/BT model; Bluetooth is on all variants. The hardware guide gives no Wi-Fi configuration steps; those depend on the application and integrator.
  • The guide does not cover Power over Ethernet setup even though PoE cable assemblies are listed under accessories.
  • Touch calibration requires a Supervisor login in System Mode. The password is not published here; it is held by whoever programmed the terminal.
