Vending machine card readers and unattended payment terminals
How card readers connect to vending machines, which device fits which machine, what it costs, and how Allstar Terminals ships every reader ready to take payments.
Yes, you can put a card reader on a vending machine, and in most cases you do not need a new machine to do it. A vending machine card reader mounts in the door, connects to the machine controller, and lets customers tap a card or phone, insert a chip card, or scan a QR code. Allstar Terminals stocks unattended payment terminals from ID TECH, PAX, Ingenico, Castles and Verifone, plus SUNMI self-service kiosks, so you can match the reader to the machine instead of the other way around.

How a vending machine card reader works
A card reader has three jobs: talk to the machine, take the payment, and get the authorization back fast enough that the customer is still standing there.
Talk to the machine
Most modern vending machines use MDB, the industry-standard protocol between the controller and payment devices. Older laundry, arcade and car wash equipment often uses a simple pulse signal instead.
Take the payment
The reader accepts contactless cards and phone wallets, and on fuller terminals, chip insert, magstripe and PIN. QR codes are increasingly common for app and loyalty payments.
Stay connected
Each authorization goes to your processor over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular LTE. Outdoor and remote sites usually need LTE.
Quick check before you buy
Look for an MDB port on the machine controller, or a coin-mech pulse input. If it has either, a card reader can usually be added without replacing the machine.
Four types of unattended payment devices
1. Tap-only contactless readers
The smallest and lowest-cost option. They accept contactless cards and phone wallets only. The ID TECH Kiosk V fits tight bezels and is a drop-in upgrade for Kiosk III mounting holes. The PAX IM25 is a contactless Android option.
2. Contactless readers with a screen
A display lets customers see the price, choose a product or follow prompts. The ID TECH VP7225 adds a 2.4-inch touchscreen, a QR camera, and pulse or MDB connections through a dongle, and one reader can serve up to four machines.
3. Full unattended terminals with chip and PIN
For sites where some customers will insert a chip card or need to enter a PIN: fuel, parking, ticketing and higher-ticket vending. Options include the ID TECH VP6825, ID TECH VP6800, PAX IM30 and IM30 V2, Castles S1U2, Verifone UX700-ML, and the Ingenico Self series.
4. Self-service kiosks
When the customer orders as well as pays, as in quick-service restaurants and retail, a full kiosk such as the SUNMI K2 or K2 Mini combines the screen, the payment device and the receipt printer in one unit.

What it costs to add a card reader to a vending machine
Plan for three costs: the hardware, the connection, and payment processing. On our store, ID TECH unattended readers currently start at about $240 for the Kiosk V and run to about $680 for the VP6800, before volume pricing. Full self-service kiosks cost more. Machines on Wi-Fi or Ethernet add no connectivity cost, while LTE builds need a data plan. Processing fees depend on your processor and your ticket size. Small-ticket vending is often priced differently from retail, so ask your processor for an unattended or micro-transaction rate.
Open hardware vs. all-in-one vending platforms
All-in-one platforms such as Nayax and Cantaloupe bundle the reader, cellular service, payment processing and a telemetry dashboard under one monthly program. That suits an operator who wants a single provider for everything.
Open hardware like ID TECH, PAX and Ingenico suits a different buyer: ISOs, ISVs and operators who want to choose their own processor and software, keep pricing under their own merchant relationship, and standardize hardware across many sites or brands. If you already run a payments business, open hardware lets you own the stack.
