Check first

  • Is the battery installed and the rear cover latched?
  • Are you charging with the Verifone power pack or through a base? Which base part number?
  • Does the screen show anything at all when the power pack is connected?

This guide covers taking a Verifone V400m (Plus 3G or Plus 4G) out of the box, fitting the battery, charging it with the power pack or on a base, and what the first power-on looks like. It does not cover loading a payment application; that is done before the terminal ships.

Before you start

  • The box should contain the terminal, a paper roll and the power adapter. If anything is missing or the carton looks tampered with, stop and contact Allstar support.
  • Use only the Verifone power pack for the V400m (PWR475-010-01-A). Verifone warns that an incorrectly rated supply can damage the unit.
  • Do not plug the power pack into an outdoor outlet.
  • The battery is Verifone part BPK475-001-01-A (11.2 Wh, 3.85 V, 2890 mAh).

Steps

  1. Inspect the carton and terminal for damage or tampering, then remove the plastic wrap and the protective film on the display. Expected: no damage. A tampered label or component means the unit should not be used.
  2. If the battery is not fitted, slide the latch on the rear cover and lift it off. Lower the battery into the compartment, refit the cover and slide the latch to lock it. SIM and SAM cards sit in slots under the battery. Expected: the rear cover is flush and latched.
  3. To charge with the power pack, plug the adapter cable into the power port on the terminal, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet. Expected: the terminal charges. Verifone's guide does not describe a charge LED; check the on-screen battery indicator.
  4. To charge on a base, plug the base's power cable into the port on the side of the base in the direction of the arrow, plug the adapter into a wall outlet, and lower the terminal onto the base until it rests on the connector. Expected: the terminal charges through the base. The Charging Base (M475-S02-00) is charge-only; the Full-Function Base (M475-S02-08) adds Ethernet, phone line and serial ports.
  5. Power on and watch the first boot: the Verifone copyright screen appears, then the payment application starts on its own. Expected: the application's idle screen. If you see "DOWNLOAD NEEDED", no application is loaded; contact Allstar support.
  6. Before taking transactions on battery, confirm the battery level is above 10%. If it is lower, connect the power pack first. Expected: battery above 10% or terminal on power. Verifone states this protects transaction data and printing.

If that did not work

  • Terminal does not start: plug it into a dedicated outlet, check that the power connector is fully inserted, and try again. If it still does not start, contact Allstar support.
  • Blank or dark display: tap the screen. The unit may be in screen-saver mode.
  • Any tamper or security message: stop and contact Allstar support. Do not open the unit; it has no user-serviceable parts.

Stop and contact support if

  • Any tamper or security alert on the screen: stop and contact Allstar support.
  • DOWNLOAD NEEDED on screen: the terminal has no payment application loaded. Do not attempt a download yourself; contact Allstar support.
  • The terminal does not start on a known-good outlet with the correct power pack and all connectors fully seated.
  • Battery swollen, hot, or the cover will not latch: stop using the unit.

Contact Allstar support with the model (V400m Plus 3G or Plus 4G), serial number, which charger or base you are using, payment application and processor, and the exact message on screen.

Notes

  • Verifone's installation and quick guides do not describe a charge LED, a charge time, or the power button press sequence for the V400m. The guides only state that connecting power starts the terminal and that the application launches after the copyright screen.
  • Verifone's Device Setup page describes the Charging Base as docking and charging for the V400m Plus 3G; the Specifications page says the charger accepts power from either the power pack or a base. Treat both Plus 3G and Plus 4G as supported on the base unless your unit's paperwork says otherwise.
  • The guide gives no runtime figure for the battery, only its capacity (11.2 Wh).
