Exact messages this covers

  • Do you want to Connect to WIFI?
  • Do you want to Connect GPRS?

Check first

  • Is this the first boot (connection prompt on screen) or an existing terminal that needs a new network?
  • Is the router on 2.4 GHz? Valor lists these models as 2.4 GHz only.
  • For a VL110, was the SIM installed and activated before the terminal shipped?

This guide puts a Valor VL100, VL100 Pro, VL110 or VP100 online. On first boot the terminal asks whether to connect to Wi-Fi; after that, the network is changed from the Comm Config menu. The VL110 can also run on its SIM card.

Before you start

  • Wi-Fi must be 2.4 GHz. Valor lists these models as 2.4 GHz only.
  • The Wi-Fi password is case-sensitive.
  • Ethernet is only on the countertop models (VL100, VL100 Pro, VP100), through the LAN port on the bottom.
  • On a VL110, the SIM is installed and activated by your ISO before shipment. Allstar does this when the order is programmed; if the terminal shipped blank, cellular may not be provisioned.
  • Comm Config may ask for a password. That password was set when the terminal was programmed; Allstar support can help.

Steps

  1. First boot on Wi-Fi: at "Do you want to Connect to WIFI?" choose 1. Yes, Connect, pick your SSID, enter the password and select OK. Expected: the terminal loads to the home screen.
  2. First boot on cellular (VL110): choose 2. No, I Don't have WIFI, then at "Do you want to Connect GPRS?" choose 1. Yes, Connect. Expected: the terminal connects over the SIM and loads to the home screen.
  3. Ethernet (countertop models): plug the cable into the LAN port on the bottom of the terminal. Expected: the terminal uses the wired connection.
  4. Changing Wi-Fi later: tap the Main Menu icon, choose 7 Comm Config, tap Comm Config, tap WiFi, tap your SSID, then tap Configure. Expected: the password screen appears.
  5. Enter the password, tap OK, press the Cancel button, then tap Connect. Expected: the terminal joins the new network.
  6. To swap connection types, tap the Connection Icon at the top of the home screen and pick the type. On the VP100 the active type is highlighted green. Expected: the chosen connection is active.

If that did not work

  • Confirm the router is on 2.4 GHz and other devices can join it with the same password.
  • Try Reboot from the Favorites menu, which power-cycles the device.
  • A VL110 with no cellular service after the GPRS prompt usually means the SIM was not activated. Contact Allstar support.
  • If the terminal asks for a password you do not have, stop and contact Allstar support.

Stop and contact support if

  • The terminal asks for a password to reach Comm Config or Host Utility and you do not have it: stop and contact Allstar support. Do not guess.
  • The VL110 shows no cellular connection and the SIM was not activated by the ISO: contact Allstar support; SIM provisioning is done in the Valor Portal.
  • Any tamper or security alert: stop and contact Allstar support.

Contact Allstar support with the model (VL100, VL100 Pro, VL110, VP100 or VP100 Pro), serial number or EPI, your processor, the connection type you want, the router's band and security type, and the exact message on screen.

Notes

  • The quick reference guides give the Comm Config path as 'tap the menu icon, 7 Comm Config'; the exact position of Comm Config in your menu may differ by software version.
  • Valor's spec sheets list the VP100 and VL100 Pro as 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; the VL110 brochure lists 2G/3G/4G, Wi-Fi and USB without naming a band. Assume 2.4 GHz for all of these models.
  • The VL110 knowledge-base article says the ISO pre-installs the SIM. SIM parameters are managed in the Valor Portal; the SIM Configuration Guide on Valor's knowledge base is an embedded document that could not be read, so it is not cited.
  • Valor's knowledge base also documents a terminal reset under Host Utility; it clears the terminal database and is not reproduced here.
